Stuart Creek Station
lies between the Olympic
Dam mine and Lake Eyre south is leased by BHP Billiton.
It takes in a range of different country including sandhills,
breakaways, mound springs and gibber plains.
BHP Billiton’s principal focus is the maintenance
of environmental and heritage values whilst striving
towards cost neutrality through low intensity, organically
accredited, pastoral activities. Small herds of beef
cattle and a trial herd of domesticated camels are managed
for sale in domestic or export markets. Mound springs
and some sensitive waterholes and significant vegetation
patches are fenced from stock to allow their rehabilitation.
A primary objective of BHP Billiton is to demonstrate
that contemporary pastoral management should be consistent
with conservation initiatives in the region. Monitoring
and management of rabbits and feral predators is undertaken
with the aim of facilitating reintroductions of threatened
fauna from the adjacent Arid
Recovery Reserve into this operating pastoral lease.
