Welcome to the Outback
Lakes Region, an incredibly unique and spectacular part
of South Australia.
The Outback Lakes Region is an area bounded by a number
of renowned salt lakes, and it has some of Australia’s
most dramatic and spectacular landscapes. Rich
in history, it is the home to significant Aboriginal
icons, the epic trails of explorers such as Stuart and
Eyre, and the famous Oodnadatta, Birdsville and Strzelecki
tracks.
Complex and diverse land types support a vast range
of native plants and animals, as well as productive
livestock enterprises. Following flooding it transforms
into a lush sea of grasses, wildflowers and shrubs,
but even in drier times vegetation still continues to
thrive.
The producers in this region are passionate about preserving
and improving this special part of Australia, and their
years of experience in the area is reflected in their
adaptive management skills. For example, livestock numbers
are kept at specific levels so native plants and trees
can flourish at all times.
A group of producers from the region called Outback
Lakes SA are committed to pursuing opportunities to
gain an edge in the marketing of their livestock, while
at the same time promoting the benefits of the region.
“With the continual improvement
of property and herd management and breeding selections,
coupled with a developing awareness of customer and
consumer requirements, the northern cattle and sheep
producers of SA are well-placed to increase marketing
opportunities. ”
